Nigeria Final Evaluation « Solar Energy Works Contract in Borno State »
July 2021 – December 2021
Solar energy has for some time been recognised as a viable solution for specific energy needs, for example in the provision of solar powered fridges to improve the supply chain for vaccines. Solar energy is particularly well suited to closing much of the access gap by replacing diesel and kerosene. Today, renewable energy is already lower in cost than diesel or kerosene in many situations.
Nigeria’s electricity consumption amounts to about half of what would be expected at its current level of GDP per capita. The electricity supply chain—generation, transmission, and distribution—faces substantial challenges due to years of underinvestment. The Government of Nigeria has several polices that support the utilization of renewable energy resource for electrification of the percentage of the nation’s population yet on electrified. The project Solar Energy Works Contract in Borno State involves installing solar energy systems at agreed sites in Borno state to support better delivery of key public services. These works contracts are part of the overall EU Support to Response, Recovery and Resilience in Borno State (3RBS). The project was implemented under three major work streams/packages including:
