Women’s political participation and leadership at the local level are critical for reaching gender equality and a foundation for sustainable development. In Western Africa, while progress has been made towards gender equality and women’s empowerment, substantial challenges remain, particularly at the subnational level.
Young women are especially underrepresented in politics. The event “Political Participation of Women: Event for Local Women Leaders in Western Africa” that took place in Lomé, Togo on 5-6 December 2024, aimed to bring together local women leaders from various municipalities, cities, and regions across Western Africa and Cameroon to foster collaboration, share experiences, and define key actions for overcoming barriers to women’s full, equal and meaningful participation, thus improving governance and leadership.
The event was attended by over 80 participants from across Western Africa and Cameroon.
