We are excited to announce that we have secured a new project in Togo. As part of this initiative, we will provide logistical support and preparation for an upcoming event in December 2024, focused on local elected female representatives in Togo.

Women’s political participation and leadership at the local level are essential to achieving gender equality and laying the foundation for sustainable development. In West Africa, although progress has been made in advancing gender equality and empowering women, significant challenges persist, especially at the subnational level. Young women are underrepresented in politics. This event aims to bring together elected women from various municipalities, cities, and regions across West Africa to foster collaboration, share experiences, and develop strategies to overcome barriers to full, equal, and meaningful participation, thereby enhancing governance and leadership.

West Africa is known for its cultural diversity, rich history, and complex socio-political landscape, with countries at different stages of political stability, economic development, and social progress. Despite these differences, common challenges affect women in leadership, especially in local political roles throughout the region.

The event will also promote the cross-cutting objectives of the European Commission, including environmental and climate change concerns, a human rights-based approach, the inclusion of persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples, and gender equality.

The project is scheduled to begin in September, with a contract duration of 10 months.
